3D Hypertension

March 4th, 2010

Hypertension, to those that know a little bit about blood pressure, is a daunting word but to majority of us out there is something unseen and seldom thought about. People living with hypertension may be oblivious to their condition and if they are away are still in the dark as to the effects it has on their systems and potentially life.

When the heart is placed in a state of repetitive stress certain adaptations take place. In the case of excessive Hypertension these adaptations are negative ones. When the systolic BP (first reading ) is high (>145mmHg) it means the blood when pumped out of the heart is exerting a much greater force than normal (120mmHg).

The heart walls thicken to accommodate the forceful contractions of the heart resulting in overdeveloped musculature and smaller area for blood to refill the heart. Forceful contractions may cause loosening of debris lining the blood vessels which could ultimately lead to a stroke or heart attack.

When the diastolic (second reading) is high (>90mmHg) is means the pressure exerted on the arteries is higher than the normal 80 mmHg. When diastolic BP reached values higher than 100mmHg the situation increases in severity as the heart can no longer refill. The blood cannot be pumped out and the individual may experience a severe condition of heart failure where inadequate supplies of oxygen reach the brain, vital organs and heart tissue.

Healthy Eating Plans

February 19th, 2010

The purpose of a healthy eating plan is to instil a lifestyle change  and in effect become healthy and fit. The only problem with most eating plans is that they require professional guidance and the best way to get a healthy eating plan is to seek professional advice because these individuals are specialists in their filed and they are aware that everyone is different and that there is no generic answer for everyone. My suggestion would be to see a dietician in conjunction with a biokineticist (trainer), which will be of long term benefit as habits can be formed and changing habits is what will lead you to your goals.

Some general tips which may seem obvious but are not practised include:

  • Eating 5 fruits and vegetables each day.
  • Try to reduce the amount of fat eaten (trim excess fat off meat, use non-stick pans instead of oil, stir-fry foods rather than frying and deep frying).
  • Drink 6-8 glasses of water every day.
  • Exercise for thirty minutes most days (get doctors clearance before attempting exercise).

These tips are general and you may feel you have heard them a thousand times over but I can tell you with confidence that many people do not follow these simple tips. A healthy eating plan is all about good preparation and planning. It is easy to get a take-out if you did not take a prepared meal with you to work or school. However if you take healthy and delicious food with you and plan your days meals, the temptation will be taken out of play and good choices and healthy eating plans can be sustained.

With all of these simple tips you can make a difference to your life. Remember to keep reading and gathering information, store and collect healthy recipes and possibly seek professional advice if you do not know how to change your lifestyle or need that support. At the end of the day it is all about a positive and sustainable change.
